Here at the Disclosure and Barring Service, safeguarding vulnerable groups is at the heart of everything we do. We issue almost 6 million DBS checks every year, providing information to employers and organisations, so they can prevent unsuitable people from working with children or vulnerable adults. We also make complex decisions about whether to bar somebody from getting jobs in certain sectors. This is a pivotal moment in the future of DBS, it is the start of major change and we are looking for people who can hit the ground running. In this role you can be directly responsible for shaping the future of our organisation.

As the Legal Director, you will be a qualified lawyer with experience of managing a significant in-house legal function within a highly complex private or public organisation.  The role involves advising at a senior level on a range of corporate matters which include commercial arrangements and developments, freedom of information and Data Protection law, interpretation of primary legislation and statutory instruments and regulatory regimes.  You will collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, providing legal input on a range of complex and strategic issues.  Reporting directly to the Deputy CEO, you will play an integral role in providing expert legal advice to Boards, committees and other senior governance forums working collaboratively with them to ensure effective decision making.

You will be a qualified lawyer with at least 5 years post qualification experience gained within a comparable environment, with a proven track record of ensuring compliance with a challenging set of legislative and regulatory requirements.  You are likely to currently be operating at a similar level, preferably within an in-house legal function.  You will bring a positive, dynamic style with high levels of emotional intelligence and able to deal with a range of complex challenges from a range of stakeholders.
