About us

Who we are and what we do:

The Disclosure and Barring Service is an arm’s length body of the Home Office, with a clear mission – to make recruitment and employment safer, safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society.

We do this across two functions as the name suggests – disclosure and barring. In Disclosure, we process DBS checks and issue DBS certificates across England, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. We also, within Barring, maintain two Barred Lists across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland – these are lists of individuals who are barred from taking part in certain roles/activities with children and/or vulnerable adults. We make considered decisions as to whether or not an individual should be included on one or both of these lists.

Our culture and values:

We are a people-first organisation. We care about how we work, as much as what we deliver.

We build teams around trust, collaboration, and compassion, and look after each other so we can deliver the best possible service for our customers and partners – in turn, safeguarding those that need our support. We want colleagues to feel included, valued, and able to be themselves at work. We believe good ideas come from different perspectives, and we’re committed to creating an environment where our people can contribute and grow.

Our values are centred around integrity, excellence, and collaboration, and they guide the decisions we make daily.

  • We Act with Integrity – we act with honesty, fairness, and accountability
  • We Pursue Excellence – we work to a high standard, continuously improving the services we provide
  • We Work Together – we support one another, and collaborate to achieve a shared vision
  • We Embrace Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Equality, diversity, and inclusion:

We believe people should feel safe, respected, and able to be themselves at work. Inclusion isn’t a statement for us – it’s something we’re continuing to build into how we work, how we treat one another, and how decisions are made. We serve a diverse public, and we’re at our best when our organisation is reflective of the people and communities we support. Different perspectives help us make better choices, challenge gaps, and create outcomes that are inclusive, equitable, and fair for everyone.

Why join us at DBS:

A career with DBS means a career with purpose, community, and room to grow – it’s an understanding that each and every role within our organisation helps safeguard vulnerable groups including children.

When you join us, you’re becoming part of a supportive network of people who care deeply about the work they do and the impact it has.

We invest in learning and development, because we want you to thrive, not just succeed, and we’re about to offer flexible, remote working opportunities that support a healthier work-life balance for our people.
